WHEN I WOKE UP AGAIN, it was still dark, and I was crumpled up in the backseat of a car—new, by the fresh smell of it. Lake was in the backseat with me. I couldn’t see who was driving, not until my vision cleared. Brendan. Maybe he was the one who’d taken care of my newly bandaged wound. The red and blue lights from outside blanketed his sharp features, from his pointed nose to the sharp cut of his jaw.
“She’s up,” Lake told him before nudging my feet with her hip. “Hey, how’re you feeling?”
“Like I got hit by a truck.” I groaned as I pulled myself into a sitting position. “And then it backed up and hit me again.”
“Sorry. That’s the inoculation dart,” said Brendan, and he patted his leg where his jacket covered his holsters. “It’s just procedure.”
The plan was to scratch my head with a clammy hand now that I could feel it. But moving my hands only jerked my wrists against the metal cuffs biting into them. “What the hell is this?” I lifted my wrists so Brendan could see the mistake someone had clearly made. Except Lake was bound too. The cuffs jingled as she shook her arms to show me. “What’s going on?”
“We’ve been arrested!” Lake said cheerfully.
“What?” The red and blue lights. We were in a black van, the same kind as the one that’d transported me from the police station in Buenos Aires. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Brendan apologized as I slumped against the seat. “With the massive police force that descended on you at the amusement park, it was the only way I could get you out of the city in one piece. I had to really play some mind tricks to get them to let me transport you myself.”
“Transport us where?” I looked at Lake. There was no trace of her earlier grin anywhere on her face.
“Upstate,” Brendan answered. “To the Counter-Sect Task Force headquarters. Chae Rin’s already been captured.”
The fight at Carnegie Hall. Belle must have gotten the best of her.
“Where is Belle?” I asked quickly. “And that guy—they both saw you help us.”
“Rufus . . .” Brendan shook his head. “I got called in to regroup with the rest of my unit at the police station for a joint operation to stop the ‘Maia’ in Coney Island. Carnegie Hall’s outside structure was mostly intact, but the inside hall was almost rubble by the time I got back there. I couldn’t find him.”
“Oh.” Lake lowered her eyes.
“Well, granted,” Brendan continued after thinking about it, “he was one of the guys who ambushed you in the tunnels outside London. Probably killed off some other agents.”
“Oh,” Lake said, perking up immediately. “Then screw him.”
Well, that was one way of putting it. A terrible beat pounded inside my skull. Guess I was still in recovery mode. “What about Belle?”
“Belle was already gone by the time I got there. So far she hasn’t told anyone. Otherwise I’d be the one in cuffs.”
Maybe the part of her that was good was still in there somewhere.
